Window Cleaning Question: Do Window Cleaners Really Make $40 to $50 an Hour?

August 24th, 2007 Posted in Window Cleaning Q & A

Q: I have been looking into starting a window washing business for me and my son to work together. However I’m a bit skeptical about the claims that window cleaners can make $40 to $50 an hour. Do window cleaners really make this kind of money?

A: I don’t blame you for being skeptical. It is hard to believe that a window cleaner can make more per hour than many people who have a college degree. But yes it is very true that window cleaners can and do make upwards of $40 per hour. Not all window cleaners make this much as it depends very much on the going rates in your area, and whether or not you are properly bidding your jobs. Let me give you some examples:

The average track home in my area is about $200 for interior/exterior window cleaning and takes me about 3 hours to clean, which means that I’m making a little over $66 an hour.

$200 / 3 hours = $66.67 per hour.

Even if I take out 15% for taxes I’m still making over $56 per hour.

$200 - 15% = $170 / 3 hours = $56.67 per hour

A good window cleaner (and by good I mean efficient) who is bidding his/her jobs correctly can make around $500 per day if they stay busy. On some jobs, especially larger multi story commercial buildings, a window cleaner’s hourly rate might go upwards of a $100 per hour after taxes.
