Window Cleaning Question: Do I have to form a corporation?

July 20th, 2007 Posted in Window Cleaning Q & A

Here is a question I recieved from one of my newsletter subscribers:

Q: I would like to start my own window cleaning company, but i am a little intimidated by the prospect of having to set up a corporation. Do I really have to set up a corporation to run my business?

A: First of all let me just say that I am not an attorney, so do not take my advice as legal counsel, but here is what i do know.

Forming a corporation is a big step and may be overkill for your window cleaning goals. There are several ways you can set up your business and in my book ‘Streak Free Profits‘ I go over the various ways and their pros and cons.

If you are planning on having your window cleaning customers make their checks payable to you, then you don’t have to do anything more than keep track of your income and pay the appropriate amount of income tax in april.

If you want to have the checks made out to your business name (I.e. XYZ Window Cleaning) then you will need to go down to your county clerks office and File a DBA (Doing Business As) also known as a ficticious Firm name. This will cost you around $15. Once this is completed then you will be able to open a bank account and accept checks in your company name.
