Question: Lately, I’ve noticed that many customers want the cheapest price. They aren’t very concerned with the pro services and just want the windows cleaned. So boasting the cheapest price in town would get the most response. Why is this approach not recommended?

Answer: I personally never want to be the cheap price competitor. Now, that’s not to say that there’s not a market for that. In fact, someone has to fill that niche in the market. Also, don’t be fooled into thinking that everybody wants the cheapest price. If that were case then Mercedes, Nieman Marcus and other upscale businesses in every segment you can imagine would quickly be run out of business.

But to answer your question, the reason that being the “cheap price” window cleaner is not recommended is that in order to be the cheapest, you cannot typically afford to provide the best in quality, equipment and customer service. You cannot afford to “wow” your customer and build a relationship with them.

Without relationships, your clients will leave you in a heartbeat for the next cheapest price that comes along.

You have to figure out ways to “differentiate” yourself in the market. Otherwise you become a standard commodity and can be easily replaced by the next guy with the best price.

Competing on price is the hardest way to build a solid business for the long term. Sure, you can go out and get a bunch of work right quick. But chances are, it won’t be very profitable and you won’t keep the customer for long.

Question: How often should you change your window cleaning solution?

Answer: As often as you’d like. If you are working only on exterior windows, then it is no big deal to have dirty water, and you can use it for a long time.

However if you are going to be cleaning interior windows, it’s a good idea to have fairly clean water handy so if you drip on the customers light carpet you don’t leave black little spots.

Rule of thumb is, if you think your water is to dirty then change it cuz it probably needs it, but just don’t get carried away with that or you’ll spend way more than you should on soap. Just use your best judgment as there is no hard and fast rule for this.

Question: I often struggle with taking off our screens, I watched your video but on many of the screens I still had to go inside to take off the screen. Is this something you run into on a regular basis?

Answer: Practice makes improvement. I struggled a lot with screens at first as well, but just keep on going and soon they will be much easier for you to pop out from the outside.

However some houses have really tight screens or frames that prevent you from removing the screens from the outside, so in this case you will have to remove the screens from the inside.

There is nothing wrong with removing the screens from the inside, if that is the method you prefer, just do what you’re comfortable with.

Question: What do you do with the window blinds? Do you just raise them up and try to clean under the best you can without damaging them or is there another secret?

Answer: If you absolutely must take them down to get to the window, then do so very carefully, window blinds are a pain in the butt and are often installed in a very half assed way and the last thing you want is to damage your customers blinds.

99% of the time we just raise or open the blinds and work around them, it really doesn’t interfere with the quality of your work and with practice it won’t slow you down at all either.

As you know I encourage the window cleaning success readers to send me their questions and concerns about the window cleaning industry and I must say that two of the most frequent questions I receive is “how did you grow your business so quickly?” and “what is your secret?”. And it’s because of these questions that I am writing this today…

I have decided to reveal my “Secret to Success” to the world.

Are you ready for it?

My super secret weapon to growing my window cleaning business from zero dollars to over $87,000 in one year can be explained in 5 simple words:

Massive Action Equals Massive Income.

That’s it. Not a very impressive secret is it?

In fact, many people feel let down after I share this so called “secret” with them. Why? Because they are expecting some super high tech marketing campaign or an ultra fancy sales pitch and instead I give them five words.

While advanced marketing strategies and effective sales pitches have their place, they are simple not necessary to build a wildly successful window cleaning business. All that is needed is that you understand the meaning and opportunity hidden in these five special words and then act upon it.

So let’s dive right into the meat of the issue. What does Massive Action Equals Massive Income mean to your business?

The first thing you need to understand is that like all businesses, success in the window cleaning business is a numbers game. By which I mean, offer your service to enough people and your business will thrive. Expose it to only a few and watch it stagnate and die.

While this may sound like pretty basic stuff, you have in fact been given the secret of the most successful businesses in the world.

Once I understood the power of this concept and applied it to my business, my income skyrocketed. Let me show you how it can do the same for you.

Lets start with massive action, and by massive action I mean that you follow a consistent plan of attack for a set number of days to achieve a desired result and during this time you are pushing as hard as you possibly can.

You then, at the end of this plan, take a look at what you’ve achieved, tweak it for better success and then repeat the cycle. Is this starting to make sense?

Let me give you a solid example which also happens to be the same method I followed to achieve success with my window cleaning business.

In this example the idea is to grow your window cleaning business as fast as possible so we will take massive action for a solid month and see where we end up.

In order for your business to succeed, you need customers; therefore we will take massive action to attract more paying customers to your business.

I started out with flyer marketing because it is a cost effective way to reach large numbers of prospects very quickly and it works very well with a window cleaning service.

So for the next four weeks we are going to blanket the residential neighborhoods in your town with flyers. Each week we will distribute 1500 flyers, which breaks down to 250 flyers a day for six days. This may sound like a lot and it is (massive action remember?) but considering you can easily pass out 200 flyers in one to two hours in an average residential neighborhood, you are looking at maybe 12 hours of flyering per week.

If you are thinking that there is no way you can put in this much work, don’t despair, it may be a lot of work at first, but after your first month of massive action, you will easily be able to afford to pay someone else to handle your flyer distribution while you are free to focus on cleaning windows.

Back to our example, after four weeks of distributing flyers, you will have passed out 6000 flyers. For arguments sake, let’s say your flyers were terribly designed and only converted at 1%.That means that 60 people will contact you for an estimate. Of those, let’s be conservative again and say only 30% of the 60 become customers. That still means that you gained 18 brand new paying customers this month.

Before I go on, I want to point out that the above conversion rates are extremely conservative. Most of my flyers convert between 6% – 10% and I also turn at least 70% to 80% of the people who request estimates into paying customers. If you numbers are way below this, then you are doing something wrong.

Continuing on, as a result of your massive action you gained 18 new residential customers and with the average residential house costing between $200 and $250 for basic window cleaning, this means that on the low end you just made and additional $3600 in one month. Not to shabby huh?

Also even after you subtract your material cost of producing the flyer (my flyers cost around $0.03 each) you are still left with $3420.00 and a customer acquisition cost of only $10 per customer.

Now this is a basic example and only covered a one time basic window cleaning with no extra services. But in reality, providing you did a good job and provided quality customer service, you have probably just gained a customer for life, who will more than likely have you back out in six months to do their windows again. Also this example does not cover any referrals this new customer may send your way. I have found that many of my customers send me an average of 3 to 5 new referrals each year and if you offer an incentive for them to refer you new customers that number rises dramatically.

Now imagine if you did this month after month after month…How many new customers would you gain? How many referrals would those customers send you? How much money would you be making if you started taking Massive Action?

The above example is the exact same method of massive action to create the massive income my business now generates. Obviously as my income grew I outsourced my flyer distribution and branched out into other forms of advertising and marketing to further grow my business. But it all started out with the simple commitment to take massive action. It worked for me and I promise it will work for you.

———-
Question: My biggest concern with this business is how I would get commercial and residential clients from storefronts and homes that already employ a window cleaning company. I could see it if I had some sort of track record, but I’ll have nothing in terms of references when starting out.

Answer: This is called marketing. Gathering new residentail customers will be easy as pie using the techniques I give you in Streak Free Profits. Commercial customers require a slightly different tactic, but can still be aquired relativly easy as long as your not afraid of putting in some effort. I provide you with a commercial marketing packet that you can modify and send out/give to prosepective commercial clients. This packet has a very high conversion value.

Question: As for stealing clients from existing window cleaners, this is not something to worry about as it happens naturally in the course of business. All you have to worry about is making sure your company makes itself stand out from the competition and customers will flock to you.

Also, Do clients even want there windows cleaned in the winter? I live in Virginia and am not sure if exterior windows can even be cleaned when temperatures go below freezing. I think most customers would think of window cleaning as a springtime chore.

Answer: Commercial Businesses need their windows cleaned year round, typically monthly if not twice a month or weekly. So even in the winter you will have commercial work. Residential window cleaning will definately slow down in the winter as you are right, many homeowners do not have their windows cleaned in the winter months, but then you might be suprised at how many still do.

And yes, you can still clean windows when it is below freezing out, you just start with hot water and you some special chemicals to the window cleaning solution that will prevent it from freezing while not affecting its ability to clean a window.

Window Cleaning Q & A:

Question: I am very interested in starting a window cleaning business here in southeast Pennsylvania. I want to jump to full time right away, because I hate my job so much. I have savings to last 6 months until this business takes off. Because of the way the economy seems to be headed, do you still feel that this is a good business to get into? Also, would you start full time, or build the business part time? Thanks for your help.

Answer:I can totally understand your dislike for your your current job. I found out a long time ago that I am a great ‘worker’, but a terrible ‘employee’. Working for yourself is the only way to go. Also way to go on planning in advance and having enough money in savings before you quit your job. however jumping into a window cleaning business full time right from the get go can fairly difficult, especially with winter and the slow season fast approaching.

As far as the economy goes in relation to owning your own window cleaning business – yes the economy is bad/failing, but events and timing will never be absolutely perfect for starting your business. In terms of effects on your business, you may see a slight TEMPORARY decrease is business from your lower income clients, but you will see almost no change from your middle class and higher clients. And if for some reason in your area you do notice a change, then you just need to shift your marketing efforts to target the high/wealthy income customers and comercial clients.

My advice – Start your business now! I do not believe in waiting until the perfect time, as that perfect time will never appear. I do recommend however that you start your business part time right now and work it around your existing jobs schedule And throw that 6mos of savings into an interest bearing account and hold onto it. Work hard on getting your name out there and keeping all of your available work hours booked up while at the same time perfecting your window cleaning skills and increasing your speed and efficency. This will pay off big when spring rolls around and you are ready to jump into window cleaning full time.

As spring cleanings start to give way into full blown summer cleaning frenzy you can quit your job if you still feel the need and focus on your window cleaning business full time. Before you quit your job, take some time to plan out exactly what your short term and medium term income goals are for your new full time business, then break those goals down into per average jobs per day/week/month numbers to give you a perspective of what you need to achomplish to meet those goals. Also you will want to plan out your marketing strategy for the year that you will use to help you achieve your income goals.

Hopefully this will help you make the right decision for you in regards to starting your own window cleaning business.
